What is Lymphedema?

While diabetic care is arguably one of the most common, if not most important, aspect of podiatric care, I thought readers may want a break from the discussion. Spring is upon us! To me this means golf, outdoor exercise, allergies, and long days of sunlight (thank you daylight savings). It also means most of us will be slipping into shorts, skirts, and dresses, hopefully without sparking an internet debate regarding the color of said clothing items (yes, that was a reference to “what color is the dress”).

Spring fashions means exposed legs. To many this is the best time of the year, but to others with chronic swelling (edema) of the lower leg this can cause embarrassment so bad they prefer to stick the hot months out with pants on. Aside from the cosmetic implications of leg swelling, it can actually be a sign of several medical conditions. The most common of these are lymphedema, venous insufficiency, heart (cardiac) or kidney (renal) failure.

Swelling of the legs or Lymphedema can be either primary or secondary. Primary lymphedema is usually genetic, and secondary lymphedema means it is caused by a previous medical issue (usually cancer). Risk for developing lymphedema can be increased with obesity, rheumatoid arthritis or other inflammatory arthritis, and age.

Lymphedema can lead to significant swelling anywhere in the body, but the lower legs are the most common. Usually only one side is affected.  Heaviness, mild pain, and tightness are common sensations. Skin can thicken in later stages of lymphedema.

The skin thickening can lead to breakdown, ulceration, and infection. Much like we saw in previous blogs on diabetes, lymphedema ulcers need care by a podiatrist if they occur in the leg. At Cast a Foot Podiatry in Hempstead, we are well-trained in all areas of wound care.  As a podiatrist I can heal/prevent infection and eventually heal the skin itself. I may also prescribe compression stockings to keep the fluid from accumulating in your lower legs. Unfortunately, oral medication has not proven to be successful in the treatment of this condition.

Lymphedema is only one of many causes of leg swelling. If you experience chronic swelling in your legs or feet, make sure to consult our office as soon as possible. I will be able to diagnose and treat your condition based on what causes I find.
